New Technology- idesktop.tv

A new Technology that I have found is an internet site called idesktop.tv. What this site is, is a site where anyone can take any youtube video and download it into any format to input on their computer. What is the advantage of this as an educator? The advantage is that for an educator one can find a instructional video and plant it into a presentation to use in class. When the presentation gets to that particular slide the video automatically plays. No wasted time going to youtube and downloading the video. Class runs smoother and the students time in the classroom is optimized.

Online Literacy Maps

The free technology that I have chosen is an Online Literacy Map from a digital library. The one that I have chosen to use is from the National Science Digital Library’s website http://strandmaps.nsdl.org/.

What is a Online Literacy Map?

“It is a tool for teachers and students to find resources that relate to specific science and math concepts. The maps illustrate connections between concepts as well as how concepts build upon one another across grade levels. Clicking on a concept within the maps will show NSDL resources relevant to the concept, as well as information about related AAAS Project 2061 Benchmarks and National Science Education Standards.”

-These concept maps can help students understand different connections between certain topics and definitions that they normally would or could not relate to.

-This kind of technology I believe hits all four levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy with the most important level being used moving through the cognitive domain.

Technology and Education

Tomasz Dicto 1.3: New Technology

My free educational technology that I chose is the program Tomasz Dicto 1.3. This software is a vocabulary learning software that could be used for vocabulary studies. It allows students to study a broad range of vocabulary words that they themselves can choose. I think it would be most useful for students in earlier education and grade school. Students at this age always seem to pay more attention to information when not just sitting at their desk but when the information is presented in a game form and or on the computer. So, instead of having the students write down all the vocab words on paper at their desk. The teacher could have his/her students all go to the computer and use this vocabulary software to better grasp their attention and to have them remember more of the information. This program could be very useful to grade school teachers.

Podcast

The podcast I listened to was called History Podcast. History Podcast is “a show simply devoted to history. Anything and everything related to history will be covered. If you have a passion for history this is the podcast for you.” And it is created by: “We are a multicast society of speakers and listeners, listeners and speakers, teaching and learning in a life and time of change.” The podcast I listened to was called “Assassins” and it was about the history and origin of the word.

-No teaching technology was discussed but I would compare the podcast to a non-visual version of the elluminate live sessions. As far as assassin technology only weapons were discussed and they were Guns, Bombs, and Poison.

-I really had no earlier knowledge of assassins and this podcast helped explain the origin of the word and that it came from the middle east and at its beginning assassins were a group and its members were called agents located in different villages and they would try to infiltrate and overthrow governments. I also learned that President Ford outlawed assassination by any employee of our government after it was released that the CIA had tried to kill Fidel Castro on more than one occasion.

New Technology

I have selected a laptop as my technology because I believe it in my lifetime may never become obsolete. They may get smaller, faster, and way different but they will always be used by teachers. I use mine everyday as a student and I am not in the classroom more than twice a week. As a teacher being in the classroom everyday I know that I would use it everyday. I would use my laptop to store information, find information, and also to help teach the class. I believe that it is the single most important tool to teachers today. It is such an important tool that students are even receiving them as early as 6th, 7th, and 8th grade from the school for school purposes. And with most of the schools moving their classes more on to blackboard and other sites like it laptops become even more important.

RSS technology

RSS Technology can be very important and productive for teachers and their students. It is a way to get rid of the spam and junk when searching for information on the internet. Using this technology speeds up time and efficiency when learning and could effectively make ones class paperless. RSS Technology is probably the new and creative way of learning for the future I could see many teachers using this technology more and more in the near future.   The RSS Reader that I am using is called bloglines.com and I subscribed to just sports blogs and other students from class.

Thomas Edison

Lets face it without the light bulb it would be really hard to even have class. No light to read or study in. I guess that would help eliminate homework at night because it would be hard to read in the dark. Without Thomas Edison’s creation of the light bulb education technology might not exist. I am sure someone else would have come up with this invention later. Who really knows but I am going to give credit where credit is deserved.

Bill Gates

I believe Bill Gates to be one of the most important people to educational technology. He created most of what we use in everyday life such as Microsoft office and Microsoft word and so on. With out his brilliance and expertise we might be light years behind where we are now with educational technology and teaching.

Jime Wales

Jim Wales created Wikipedia. Wikipedia is one of the most commonly used internet sources of information on anything. The information on the site can be written by anyone for anyone. This site has created quick learning in recent years and is one site that is very important to educational technology.
